What is the difference between Leh and Ladakh? Or are both the same?

There are three divisions of the state of Jammu and Kashmir -

  • Jammu Division
  • Kashmir Valley Division
  • Ladakh Division
And there are two districts in the Ladakh division -

  • Leh
  • Kargil
So if we speak only Ladakh, it means both Leh and Kargil, while Leh is a separate district. People usually go to Leh and are named as Leh-Ladakh Trip. And what we see from different spots from Leh is actually the distance measured from Main Leh Town.

For example: Nubra Valley is in Leh District but its distance from Leh (Town) is 150 km.

When to go to Leh-Ladakh?

Between May and September. We went in June last.

Keep in mind that you cannot go to Leh whenever you want, because due to heavy snowfall, the highways are closed for the winter. Generally, the Manali-Leh Highway and the Srinagar-Leh Highway open in May-June.To know more about this serene place, see some thrillophilia tripadvisor reviews.

Leh-Ladakh by road or by flight?

Leh has an airport and you can reach there by flight. But if you want to feel the beauty of Leh-Ladakh and really enjoy it then you should go by the road, else you will only see the tip of the iceberg.

We were 13 people including children and we had booked Tempo Traveler from Delhi and returned to Delhi via Manali-Leh-Laddakh-Chandigarh.

Tempo Traveler can get you at the rate of Rs 7000 per day (as of July 2018).

Another factor that makes the option of going by road stronger is acclimatization.

When you go to the mountain from the plains, it takes time for the body to adjust to this new environment, by going by road you get that time automatically, while going from the flight you may get 1-2 days. Began to acclimatize.

Get out of your car or hire?

It would be more right to hire a vehicle with an experienced driver. In Leh-Ladakh, up to 85% of the road is right but some of the patches are very bad where there is a fear of getting stuck. Secondly, if the car broke down somewhere in the middle and you do not know how to make, then there will be a risk of getting stuck. And third is that if you do not have experience of driving on the mountains or you do not have the habit of driving for many hours continuously, then it will not be right to take risk with your family or friends.

How about going by bike?

Very adventurous. Thousands of bikers visit Leh-Ladakh BK every year. Some even ride bikes from Chennai to this place. If you want to go by bike, what you need to do for it, search in detail on the net. You can also check out the amusing Coorg destinations while you take a drive up here.

How many days will it take to go by car (4 wheeler)?

If we start from Delhi, it will take a total of 10-12 days.

Will it take a lot of walking to walk?

No, in most places your car will reach very close to the tourist spot and you will have to walk very little on-foot. Yes, you have to climb 50-100 steps to visit a few monasteries.

How much money will be required for this trip?

It is difficult to tell because if you want to spend, then there is no limit. As far as we are concerned about a middle class family, we were 5 children and 8 older people and the expenses for enjoying everything well (11 days trip) came within 2.5 lakhs. Places near Mumbai to visit are fun & inexpensive so don't miss that either.
